The OPTIMAGS MBCD 1.3-2.2 permits continuous coating of 150 mm wide webs for the development of ODF-strips or for the development of TDS-strips with a successive lamination unit incorporated. This type of machine has two dryer zones with a total length of 1600 mm. It is built in a linear fashion and it is designed for laboratories where size is not an issue.

On the front of a central mounting plate the winder shafts, the web guiding items, the coater, and the dryer cabin are attached. On its back, under a metal hub, all electronics and driving parts are assembled. Thus, all functions of the machine can be handled on the front side:

The foil/web to be coated is attached to the unwinder shaft on the left side of the machine. It is pulled through the machine by the laminate rewinder, situated on the right side of the machine. Web speed or rather coating speed is precisely kept constant by an optical encoder. On its way through the machine, the web slides at first on the coating roll. On its way around the roll, it passes underneath the OPTIMAGS coating knife which is mounted on the roll at an approx. 11:00- position. The coating solution is fed by an ultraprecise pump into the knife. The knife spreads the fluid onto the passing-by web. The coated web width is continuously adjustable from 10 to130 mm. Coating thickness can be adjusted from 40 um to 500 um (dry).

For paste-like, thixotropic fluids, it is possible to mount a doctor blade on the post which follows the coating roll. From here, the web enters the dryer cabin. Inside the dryer, the web slides on a stainless steel heating plate, which heats up the web from 20°C up to temperatures of 105°C. The solvents evaporate and are sucked by a ventilator which is located on the backside of the dryer. It is connected to a chimney on the top of the machine. The chimney, in turn, is connected to the lab a.c.u. The drying process can be observed through a glass window incorporated in the dryer lid.

The temperature of the two dryer zones can be adjusted individually according to the needs of your medical product. For increase of speed, a second zone is mounted mirror-like next to the first one. In this case, the web moves through this two-zone-dryer in a horizontal, linear manner.

Right after the dryer, and in case of development of TDS patches, it is possible to laminate the web with a covering foil, a membrane or a textile. They are unwound from a shaft, which is located on the upper right of the machine and is laminated subsequently onto the passing-by web in a lamination station right after the dryer exit. The final laminated web is wound up on the laminate rewinder in the lower left of the machine.
